A dirty Air Filter limits the flow of air to your engine. Fuel needs to be mixed with air to combust; this is true no matter whether you have a diesel engine or gas engine. If your air filter isn't working properly, you could be losing power and fuel mileage so make sure your car isn't choking with regular maintenance to the air intake by changing your air filter.

The air filter cleans the air coming into the engine by removing dust and grit. On older cars with carburetors or single point fuel injection, the car air filter rests on a lip on the carburetor and the filter is round or oval. In newer cars with multi point or direct injection engine, the air box is frequently tucked to the side so the hood can be shaped more aerodynamically. These filters are can be flat or conical and can be made of a disposable foam filtrate or a reusable cloth.
