Why are ABS Pumps Part(s) Important
AKA: ABS pump motor, ABS pump module, ABS brake pump
The ABS Pump supports your Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), a complex network of subsystems that take over control of your brakes in a lock-up situation (when the wheels stop faster then the vehicle) to minimize skidding and maximize vehicle control. The ABS system pulses the brake pressure on and off to stop the vehicle faster than locking the brakes. At the same time, the ability to steer around danger is maintained when the wheels are kept spinning.
Maintaining this system of mechanical, electronic and hydraulic components takes the pressure off your brake system’s hardworking components such as brake pads, rotors and—the most abused member of the team—the tire.
The ABS system is made up of the ABS valve and the ABS pump. The ABS pump is the earner of this relationship. When the ABS system is engaged—i.e. you mash the brake pedal—the two work in tandem. The ABS valve releases pressure unlocking the brakes; at which point the ABS pump re-pressurizes the system in order to reengage them. The result is a quick, controlled pulsing of the brakes. Operating in conjunction with the ABS valve, the ABS pump can fully pressurize (Lock-up), release, and reengage until the vehicle is brought under control.
Diagnosing a failed ABS pump can be as simple as responding to an “ABS” light. However, if the failure doesn’t trigger a warning light, there are still signs. These could be as obvious as a soft pedal but will most often be more subtle and localized to the ABS system since the ABS pump is not responsible for engaging the brakes under normal braking conditions. Therefore, if your brakes fail to lock up at all (lock-up should happen, albeit under controlled and short bursts) then the ABS pump may have ceased to function correctly.
