Why are Brake Hardware Part(s) Important
The Brake Hardware is one of the foot soldiers in an army of components responsible for converting delicate foot pressure at the pedal to precise control at each individual wheel. Whether your vehicle has the original braking system or an upgraded system to match its upgraded performance, there are some parts that are important regardless. These parts go beyond pads, rotors, shoes and drums but are just as necessary to a properly working brake system. From old drum brakes with no power-assist to high end ABS systems, the system lives and dies with the health of your brake hardware.
A properly working brake system needs to have all parts working correctly. That includes the small parts that are often overlooked including shims, clamps, springs, dust shields, and other mechanical parts. Before you begin any brake job, research and inspect your brake hardware for weak spots. Whether it’s a common problem to your model of vehicle or a particular type of damage to one of your brake components, there is no sense in putting a job back together with compromised hardware.
Failure to monitor your brake hardware can be just as disastrous as botching the job altogether. A busted spring seat is almost as good as just chucking the spring into the drum, closing it up and hoping for the best. Likewise new brake calipers don’t do much good if your bleeder valve is broken off preventing you from bleeding the air from the lines. So check all brake hardware and mark down any component that receive a grade of “iffy” or below. When you settle in to do the job, those potential weak spots should be backed up by replacement brake hardware. When it comes to break jobs, don’t be intimidated; be prepared.
