Why are 4WD Components Part(s) Important
Those who live in places with snow or frequently go off road are probably well aware of what 4WD (4 Wheel Drive) is and how of an asset it can be in situations where traction is limited. Usually found on off-road-minded trucks and SUVs, 4WD is achieved by simply adding a front axle in addition to the rear axle. When the driver feels it necessary, they can engage the 4WD system which turns all four wheels and can help conquer whatever terrain or road conditions they encounter.
There is a difference between 4WD and AWD (All-Wheel Drive) though it is mostly connotational; AWD implies that all wheels are constantly engaged while 4WD can be turned off at the flick of a switch. The advantages of powering all four wheels of a car are, as covered, more grip and better handling.
But this increased grip comes at the cost of fuel economy which will plummet when all four wheels are turning simply because it takes more power to do so. However, even with the 4WD disengaged, cars with this option will get worse mileage because the equipment required is quite heavy. Again, most cars with optional 4WD are off roaders that come with Live Axles which, while durable, are solid metal and can weigh a few hundred pounds. But if you live where it snows or enjoy a good romp off road, it's a small price to pay.
