At each end of the drive shaft is a universal joint. This lets it rotate freely even when the shaft is at an angle because of suspension travel. Without it, if your car hit a bump, the force of the axle reacting would bend the drive shaft. Longer vehicles may have multi-part drive shafts and those shafts will have carrier bearings to keep the components in place and rotating freely.
