Why are Fuse, Fusable Link, Fuse Block Part(s) Important
Fuses, Fusible Links and Fuse Blocks are used at varies points in your cars electrical chain. They provide check points for surge protection. Should something short out, or otherwise electrically malfunction and pulse more power than usual, one of these electrical surge protecters will trip and interrupt it before it affects other systems. Instead of a wire or a device shorting out, the electrical current stops at the fuse. Fusible links give added protection and another barrier between the fuse and the wires. The last line of defense is the fuse block which provides an exterior shell over all the individual fuses to keep them clear from moisture and debris.
Fuses are located in the fuse block. There is generally a fuse block located in the engine compartment, and/or one inside the vehicle under the steering column. The fuses in the engine compartment are for devices such as cooling fans, engine control units, or anti-lock brake pumps, just to name a few. The fuse block inside the car under the dashboard holds fuses for devices inside the passenger compartment, such as dashboard lights or interior lighting. Also fusible links can interrupt any line at any point. So when manufacturer’s need to add extra protection or electronics are particularly sensitive, fusible links can be implemented as failsafes in addition to fuses located at the fuse block.
If you have a device that isn’t working, such as your alarm or stereo unit, you always want to check the fuse first before replacing the non-functioning unit or device. Many times it’s a blown fuse, which cost less than a dollar and can be replaced easily.
