Glow Plugs
There are many sub-systems involved in making an engine work, but none are as vital as the ignition system. For diesel engines, Glow Plugs play a vital role in ignition system. While there are no spark plugs of which to speak, when the engine is cold, the glow plugs heat up the cylinder allowing the diesel combustion process to take place.

Why are Glow Plugs Part(s) Important
There are many sub-systems involved in making an engine work, but none are as vital as the ignition system. For diesel engines, Glow Plugs play a vital role in ignition system. While there are no spark plugs of which to speak, when the engine is cold, the glow plugs heat up the cylinder allowing the diesel combustion process to take place.
Diesel engines use engine heat and compression to ignite the fuel air mixture. When the engine is cold, glow plugs in the cylinder heat up to provide the necessary heat for combustion. Because of the forces involved in diesel combustion, the engines must be designed out of steel for durability. But that same steel engine acts like a heat sink and absorbs much of the heat needed to start a cold diesel engine. Glow plugs combat this problem by warming the air in the cylinder so that the combustion can take place.
