Why are Starting Part(s) Important
Before you have to worry about installing performance parts or improving fuel mileage, every engine needs a Starting System to begin the combustion cycle. The modern starter system features a series of small but important parts that manually begin the mechanical motion of the engine. Everything up until the moment of combustion within the cylinder is considered to be part of the car starter system.
It all begins when the key is turned or the remote starter system is activated by the driver. This closes a circuit that delivers power to the starter motor. Simultaneously, the starter drive engages with the flywheel. When the starter motor is activated, it turns the flywheel manually which allows for the beginning of the internal combustion process. Once the key is turned away from the 'start' position, the system disengages to prevent interference with the now-running motor and damaging the starter components.
The starter system goes bad for everyone; it is constantly stressed and is subjected to forces under which even the best machined parts will eventually fail. When one part of the starter process goes wrong, your engine can't begin it's combustion cycle and simply won't start. While this consequence of this is relatively benign (as opposed to wheel bearing failure at speed), it can be painfully inconvenient when the starter system does finally go out.
But there are a few warning signs that something in your starting system is going bad. For example, if the cranking becomes slow or labored or just stops all together, something is awry with your starter system. Any grinding noises from the gears when trying to start the car are also symptoms of a malfunctioning starter system as the gears may have not disengaged properly.
