The AC system is in charge of cooling air and circulating it through your cabin. It does through a series of pumps, condensers, fans, and a ventilation system it shares with the heater. In this inter-connected system every part is absolutely necessary, especially the Expansion Valve.
Your AC system is supposed to maintain a comfortable temperature inside your vehicle, but it would be unable to do this effectively without giving you some control over the settings. The Expansion Valve lets you regulate the flow of refrigerant to your evaporator core thereby controlling how cold the air coming from the vents will be.
