          Fuel Pump Information

Why are Fuel Pump Part(s) Important

AKA: Fuel Transfer Pump, Fuel Delivery System (Actually refers to entire Fuel System)

The Fuel Pump supplies the force that moves your fuel from your gas tank to your engine’s combustion chamber. The process may start within the gas tank itself or at the engine block depending on the setup of your fuel system. Once in the combustion chamber, the fuel is mixed with air, compressed and exploded. The resulting force powers the internal movement of your vehicle’s engine.

          Demystifying the fuel pump

You need a little background on how a fuel pump works before we get into the more advanced material. That means distinguishing the different types of fuel pumps, understanding the differences between OEM, premium and performance fuel pumps, diagnosing a faulty fuel pump or (more common) identifying a failing fuel pump accessory and—the graduate-level course—replacing a fuel pump.

          Types of fuel pumps

The most basic distinction is the difference between an electric fuel pump and a mechanical fuel pump. Within that distinction there is further variation between the mechanical,  in-line and in-tank electric fuel pumps. If you have a electric unit, you may or may not need a complete fuel pump assembly with a hanger, strainer and sending unit. On the contrary, when you need a mechanical fuel pump, that's all you get—it is generally a self-contained unit. Fuel pump pressure and flow vary across of the spectrum of fuel pump options and applications.

          Diagnosing a fuel pump

The next step is learning how to diagnose a faulty fuel pump. Symptoms of a failing fuel pump range from the obvious—the vehicle won't start because of low fuel pump pressure, to the subtle—you hear the fuel pump struggling. Regardless of fuel pump symptoms, the most common culprit behind a faulty fuel pump is a failed fuel pump accessory. Topping the list of common fuel pump accessory failures are a bad fuel pump relay and fuel pump regulator failure.

          Fuel pump replacement

If you do work your way through the accessories and all signs point to a bad fuel pump, don't worry, replacing a bad inline or mechanical fuel pump can be a simple job for a seasoned DIYer. If you're a little green under the hood, a replacement fuel pump job is a great opportunity to push past your confront zone—it's the next logical step if you've mastered doing a tune-up or replacing your own brakes.

The Fuel Pump Category features over 50 items, including mechanical fuel pumps, electrical fuel pumps in different assembly configurations and fuel pump components.

AutoShepherd stocks mechanical fuel pumps from all the leading brands: Bosch OEM fuel pumps, Airtex Premium Replacement Fuel Pumps as well as Beck/Arnley, Carter and other top manufacturers. Nos Premium Replacement Mechanical Fuel Pumps feature an improved design specially configured for street/strip performance.

Our electrical fuel pump assortment includes all designs and mounting options for both in-line and in-tank electric fuel pumps. Electric fuel pumps at the OEM and premium levels traditionally replace other electric fuel pumps while high performance fuel pumps are often used to replace mechanical fuel pumps—sometimes for performance, sometimes simply to move the part away from the engine block. In those cases a plate can be purchased from Fuel Pump Accessories Catagory to cover up the hole left by the mechanical fuel pump.

          Fuel Pumps by Output-Level

Performance Fuel Pumps can be tuned for a high performance output on both the street and/or on the track. They’re available in multiply sizes, flow-rates, and other variables. Gas milage will be more malleable with an aftermarket performance fuel pump in most applications as well.

The Nos Premium Replacement Electric Fuel Pump is a pound for pound high-value upgrade, whether you’re racing a muscle car or adding another piece of aftermarket bling on an import.

Premium Fuel Pumps improve on OEM shortcomings where possible while conserving the traditional measurements to ensure easy OEM-style installation. Premium fuel pumps tend to use upgraded internals and diaphragms for more consistency and reliability.

The Autobest Fuel Pump improves on the standard OEM design for many applications. This pump replaces fuel pumps with the older rotary vain-design resulting in less noise coming from the fuel pump.

Original Equipment (OEM) Fuel Pumps are designed to give your fuel system the same performance as when the vehicle was new. OEM fuel pumps are very often the most economical and stock option available in the automotive after market.

By matching the original design specifications, the Beck/Arnley OEM Electric Fuel Pump ensures a simple installation. Fuel line re-routing, electrical wire splicing and other modifications are kept to the bare minimum.
