That force turns the fly wheel and on into the transmission.

The cam shaft is connected to the crank shaft thought a series of gears and a chain or belt. It moves valve lifters which drive connecting rods up into the rocker arms. The rocker arms open and close the valves located in the cylinder heads allowing fuel to enter the engine cylinders and exhaust to exit.
