Why are Crank Shaft & Components Part(s) Important

Crankshaft and Crankshaft Components are some of many players that make up mankind’s most ingenious creation: the internal combustion engine.

Within the confines of the engine block, bearings and bushings protect the sensitive surfaces within. Some of the most important surfaces are those that clamp the crank shaft and cam shaft into place. The crank shaft transfers the force created by the piston into mechanical power. That force turns the fly wheel and on into the transmission.

The cam shaft is connected to the crank shaft thought a series of gears and a chain or belt. It moves valve lifters which drive connecting rods up into the rocker arms. The rocker arms open and close the valves located in the cylinder heads allowing fuel to enter the engine cylinders and exhaust to exit. Not one part can be spared in this formula, especially not the crankshaft and crankshaft components.

The crankshaft is the located deep in the belly of the beast—in the center of the engine. It gets bolted into position by as many clamps as the manufacturer can afford to fabricate into the engine block. These clamps are called main bearings and come with two or four bolts per bearing cap. These bearings lock the crankshaft into place as the crank turns with terrific centrifugal force. All the crank’s force can then be concentrated into the connecting rods which connect via wrist pins to the piston heads.
