The EGR System plays a part in the emissions control system--a complex and overarching network of pumps, valves, filters, control systems, sensors, ventilation/ recycling components, and electronics used to limit your cars exhaust of toxic byproducts. Proper emissions control helps modern cars run more efficiently than ever before by reducing fuel consumption. Today’s computer managed engines deliver more power, use less fuel, and spew fewer emissions than their predecessors. However, these tight tolerances require proper functioning components including the EGR valve and components.

Proper emissions control is argued to have effects ranging from the noticeable reduction of local smog to reducing the effects of man-made climate change.

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) is another subsystem designed to take otherwise harmful emissions and recycle them through the engine in order to burn them more completely. The system works when the engine is under constant load or slight acceleration. It takes some of the exhaust gases and puts them back into the cylinder. This reduces the temperature in the combustion chamber which reduces the amount of Nitric Oxides in the exhaust.
