Why are Idler Arms & Pitman Arms Part(s) Important

Idler Arms and Pitman Arms are a part of an ever evolving system designed to keep your vehicle under your control in defiance of momentum and gravity. In this scenario "your control" is exerted through steering, which simply means staying on a desired course. That sounds like a simple enough idea… until you apply it to a huge mass of steel lumbering along at high rates of speed over not-always-consistent terrain. That’s why your vehicle relies on an amalgamation of pumps, hoses, rods, linkages, mechanical and hydraulic energy and of course the idler arms and pitman arms.

The pitman arm is a simple moving armature that physically connects the steering box to the steering knuckle. Made sturdy, the pitman arm transfers a lot of hydraulic force onto the steering linkage to push it back and forth, giving you left and right movement at the wheel.

Opposite the pitman arm is the idler arm which performs a similar function but in a passive or idle manner. Where the pitman arm coveys force, the idler arm simply mirrors it on the opposite side so that the steering linkage is evenly supported across the span from one wheel to the other. While the idler arm may not perform as much grunt work as the its counterpart on the other end, it is 100 percent necessary to support the side-to-side motion of your front wheels.
