The Power Steering Pump is a part of an ever evolving system designed to keep your vehicle under your control in defiance of momentum and gravity. In this scenario "your control" is exerted through steering, which simply means staying on a desired course. That sounds like a simple enough idea… until you apply it to a huge mass of steel lumbering along at high rates of speed over not-always-consistent terrain. That’s why your vehicle relies on an amalgamation of hoses, rods, linkages, mechanical and hydraulic energy and of course the power steering pump.

The power steering pump is the power assist required to magnify minimal strength exerted at the steering wheel into the exaggerated force required to move the car’s wheels back and forth. This is why you can turn your wheels just as easily whether you are parallel parking the car into a tight parking spot—and the wheels must overcome friction to pivot on the ground without moving back and forth—or you are moving at a high rate of speed—and momentum makes wheel movement much less difficult.

The power steering pump does this by converting mechanical power—via a belt driven pulley—into hydraulic power. That energy is collected at the power steering pump and then transferred through hydraulic fluid onto the rest of the steering components.
