Why are Steering Gear Part(s) Important
The Steering Gear is a part of an ever evolving system designed to keep your vehicle under your control in defiance of momentum and gravity. In this scenario "your control" is exerted through steering, which simply means staying on a desired course. That sounds like a simple enough idea… until you apply it to a huge mass of steel lumbering along at high rates of speed over not-always-consistent terrain. That’s why your vehicle relies on an amalgamation of pumps, hoses, rods, linkages, mechanical and hydraulic energy and of course the steering gear.
The steering gear is the guts of the steering box or the rack and pinion. This gear operates under hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump to magnify the minimal force exerted at the steering wheel to a point where it can move the front wheels of the car.
Different ratio steering gears are available so that the ratio that your front wheels turn in comparison to how much you turn your steering wheel is full customizable. For normal purposes, smooth control is helped out by gears of subtle ratios- that means you can turn your wheel multiple revolutions to push the wheels from one extreme to the other. However for performance purposes a 1:1 ratio might be more apt for the steering gears. The 1:1 ratio in the steering gears ensure that a driver can make tight turns without much travel at the steering wheel.
