Flywheel and Flex Plates are necessary to use a clutch to change between gears. A clutch is a surprisingly simple mechanism but is only found on cars with manual transmissions; cars with automatic transmissions use a torque converter. They may use very different means in doing so, but both facilitate in the smooth changing of gears in the transmission at speed. The flywheel and flex plates are a necessary part of the manual transmission.

The flywheel is directly attached to the output shaft of the engine and pairs with the clutch disc to turn the power through the transmission. Because of the size and weight of the plate in comparison to the crankshaft coming out of the engine, the inertia of the flywheel also helps evens out power distribution.
